Mangrove Cannibalism

vegasbilly Nov 01, 2008 05:23 PM

It is with a ton of embarrassment and hesitancy that I'm posting this..truly in an attempt to prevent this from happening to others and because an earlier thread asked about this:

I had a pair together for almost 4 mos. of equal size..both young adults w/the female maybe 10% larger overall. Well, she ate him! There was plenty of copulation though I think the male was operating on instinct at his small size. Regardless, this coincided w/me being out of rodents for not quite 2 weeks. They ate two adult mice or rat pups/week. Don't know if it was pure hunger etc. but like I said at the onset, it can happen to you!

Brutal, brutal lesson to have to learn the hard way! I now have 0.4 Mangroves to add insult to injury!

Aw that sucks man, I'm sorry to hear that. That's what kept me from getting a second one. I was way too paranoid one would eat the other. I really want to get a black/white morph, but not till I have the room for another cage.

I'm sorry to hear that. I had been keeping mine together after reading your email, and noticed courtship....dunno about copulation. Anyway, after reading your post I separated them that night. I guess I'll introduce them together for short periods of time from breeding attempts, as my male is a good foot and a half larger than my female.
