tbone21 Nov 06, 2008 11:44 AM

When yous use coated wire mesh to make your iguanas cages ( i was looking at building a pvc cage) doesnt the heat lamp melt the coating? Is it ok to use regular hardware mesh? and advice on cages especially pvc cages? I plan on building one like this (http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/9008/pvccage.html) only bigger. any suggestions?

Living in WI, I use very little mesh at all except on top. I do use the coated wire mesh for the top screen where the light is, however my lights do not sit directly on the mesh. The coating protects toes when climbing from being cut or ripped off.

I have mine housed temporarily in a large bird cage while his permanent enclosure is being constructed, The bars on the cage are coated and the heat light sits about 1/4" above them. No problems yet.

You can still build your cage with screen but it will be a bit harder to manage your temps and humidity levels depending on where you reside. You can compensate this by making shure the temp is in the mid 70's in room that iguana is in.To include an adequate source of heat with an addition of a humidifier from walmart for like 45 buck or so so manage the humidity.

we made a bigger version of that cage and used poltry fencing...AND wrapped parachute cord around all the joints and he still got out somehow.. so be careful!!
