ID - newt? salamander?

This animal was found in a garage in southern England recently. It was described as "8 cm long and very docile". The pictures were posted at another forum. I don't know the person who found it; I'm just curious as to what it is.

looks like some kind of spotted newt, but its pretty hard to tell without a full body shot.
