Iguana's First Birthday!

wtamuboi Nov 11, 2008 12:20 PM

So, my Reptar's first birthday is only a few months away, and I've concluded that (in addition to the birthday party I will force people to attend), Reptar will be getting a large display cage. The 55g tank he's been in has served him well for his first year of life (he started out at just over 6", now it's looking like he'll hit 2' by his birthday), but it's seriously getting cramped. It's going to be almost completely mesh with wood framing (I live in Houston, insane heat and humidity have to be good for something, right?), but I'm wondering what to do with the bottom. Of course I could go with something really simple, but I'm pondering putting a small pond covering at least half the bottom of his tank. I'd love the sound of running water, and I'm sure Reptar would love the increased soaking capacity and increased humidity. Does anyone have any experience with anything like this?

Wow that sounds very nice!! I wish I had the space to do something like that for mine but she's already 3 feet and growing =) I think a pond would be nice so Reptar can dip himself in the water when ever he wants and you can put some big wood branches in there like the one in your picture and artificial leaves. I just ordered some artificial leaves and a big half-log from thatpetplace.com and it was pretty inexpensive compared to the pet stores. Try searching on there for cage decorations and I think they might have some misters and other things I'm sure you would like.

Here's a pic of Tigeris when she was 2 feet like yours =)

By the way, have you checked if he's really a male? I thought mine was a male until it grew to 2 feet and I realized he was a she lol. The people at the pet store never know what the sex is plus they are too small to tell. Now would be the perfect time to check =)

One thing to remember when making a pond is iguanas will almost always poo in water, so make sure should you decide to go that route, you have the ability to easily remove to clean and disinfect.
