Im thinking about going to south mountain somtime this week and I was wondering if it really is a densly populated chuckwalla place. Ive heard there are tons that live there and I want to know if thats true.

I've been there before I have found a lot just on some of the trails.It is a pretty dense population, but most likely you'll have to look in creveces to find them.
Getting late in season even in Phoenix, but perhaps you'll see one or more. Keep in mind that they are protected within the park and rangers are quite aware of their allure...leave 'em there! Specific population became protected as a result of hikers finding bags (!) of them secreted in rocks presumably for a night pickup, as well as someone seeing a "cage full" at a Florida wholesaler!
