I have my Northern Brown in a 10 gallon tank with a small half log that he uses to hide/sleep. At the other end I have a water dish and small clay dish that I put snails and worms in- the snails always migrate to the water dish (duh). I moved his tank to a shelf that has an overhead plant light (no way to get him natural unfiltered sun light). So my questions are: since he is nocturnal and sleeps under the log does he need a special light and if so how the heck can I accomplish that? Second I want to give him more security and climbing around opportunities by putting artificial plant/leaves in his tank. It is ok to use hot glue to attach them to part of the hide log?

I don't think you need a light, but that kind of thing never hurts if you feel like paying for it.

I find browns quite often in the wild, and I've only seen one in the open in daytime once.

Check posts by dekaybrown on this forum - he's the expert.

Your 10 gallon is fine, I found you some slugs under some debris just before the snow blew in.

Anyways, The snake would like it better if you scattered some (fake or real) vegetation around the bottom of the tank.

My Dekayi snakes do some limited climbing, but no where near as much as garter snakes do.

How is the wound doing?

The wound looks pretty good, more impoortantly, he has eaten a few times- earth worms. He prefers to have his tank full of grass and leaves so that he can weave around under and over. It's pretty cute right after I change/put in new grass, he disappears under it and then he'll pop his head up here and there. With winter it's getting harder to find grass though so that's why I was thinking artificial covering/leaves. I think the few slugs I found are too big, because he doesn't even really go for the bits of night crawlers that I offer, only skinny earth worms...(that should be a band name).

Just gather some grass while you can, and place it in a garbage bag for later.

They also like aspen shavings, but that is when you get it to eat outside the enclosure for you.

Slugs cut into pieces too, it's gross and messy, but I have chopped up a few slugs before.

Dekayi snakes like dim lights and NO heat.

Room temperature is plenty fine for them.
