Manokwari Locality

eksnek Nov 18, 2008 02:53 PM

Greetings,

I am planning on getting my first GTP as early as the end of the month. For the past few weeks, i have been doing as much reading as i can about these beautiful snakes. I have scanned this forum and read about 75% of the posts. Bu I did not see much info regarding the Manokwari locality. I have read that:

Sorong/Jaya tend to be the smallest and most docile, so i am leaning towards a gtp from these two localities. I read (in the classifieds, from FRANTZ) that gtp from Manokwari locality is the most docile of them all.

Can anyone give me more info regarding gtp from locality?

Tia,
Kenny

There's not as many Manokwari's out there, but they tend to have yellow in the triangles and usually a phenominal amount of blue on the dorsal area. Pretty snakes. As far as docility....you get what you get. They either are or aren't. My sorongs are both very docile..the female is probably the mellowest snake in my collection of any species bar none. I do have some Biaks that won't bite, and an Aru that will. My jayapura is docile as well. Troy is great to do business with and I bought my first two chondros from him. One of the Sorongs and my Jaya type. He is first rate in my book and I'd buy from him again. I still keep in touch with him and if I have any questions, I'll give him a call. I think Greg maxwell touches on the Manokwari locales in his book "The More Complete Chondro" (if you don't have it...get it). I'm just too lazy to go pull out the book and look right now

Thanks for the reply and info. I plan to pick one up at a local show on 11/30. If i do not see anything i like there then i will order one online. I really want one that can be handled, so i may look for a older gtp that is docile. But at the same time...i really want to raise up a neonate.

I also plan on picking up the chondro book you recommended on Amazon.

Regards,
Kenny

Yep, read chapter 3 of The More Complete Chondro by Greg Maxwell. You will learn waaaay more about localities (both general and specific) than you probably planned on. Oddly enough, unless you have a very solid paper trail, there is a very slim chance the animal is indeed exactly where the seller may be claiming. It may not even have a "locality!" Also his book will teach the difference of race vs locality, which is a very interesting topic IMO. I'm not saying you cant trust anyone's claims to what type of chondros they are selling, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If you see one you really like, is the locality really THAT important? I've never heard of a rule that says gtp from X locale is always more valuable than gtp from Y locale. I guess to me the locality debate has too many gray areas to really base my decisions on when choosing a chondro.

Well I have both Jayapuras and Manokwari's. I personally like my jayapura better then my manokwari. My jaya is very calm and doesnt bite unless I smell like rat but my manokwari is very hissy but never bites he strikes at night but is a picky eater durring the say and will only eat at nights. But then again I bought my Jayapura type chondro when she was a month old and I bought my male 6 months ago at a show and hes 3 years old. As far as Sorongs they turn out pretty nice. I like the white coloring on my manokwari and my jayapura just started changeing colors last week.
