newbie setting up enclosure

fantasyxbabygurl Nov 24, 2008 02:55 PM

i have an old custom made plexi encloser i want to convert in a crested home. its 4ft tall by maybe a ft wide and 1 1/2 ft deep. all sides plexi except front whch i plan to make a screen door.

so far sound good? im wondering 1st if theres any obvious problems with that that i missed and also how many cresteds i can comfortably fit in ths. im getting a male from a friend that breeds them. ive heard many time that you shuld only keep 1 male, but my friend says thats a rule based on the amount of room you have and that shes housed more than 1 together fine. im mostly worried about accidently ending up wth another male on my search for females.

anyways any tips on setting up the enclosure would be helpful. thanks. by the way i attached a pic of the plexi when it was in use.

No immediately obvious problems with your enclosure, presuming you've cleaned it out very thoroughly after whoever used to live in there moved out. 4x1x1.5 ft = 6 cubic ft = roughly 45 gallons. The general rule is 20 gallons for the first gecko, 10 gallons each additional, so I'd say you could house 3-4 geckos in that enlosure. Make sure you provide lots of foliage for them to hide in. Live plants are fine, but fake ones are probably easier to deal with, and they do fine with them. I would say stay away from multiple males in an enclosure - there are people who've made it work, but my understanding is that it usually only works when the males have grown up together from a very young age and neither of them has been exposed to a female.

everything mentioned before is for the mostpart correct. your major problem will be the temp and humidity with a full screen side. i keep cresteds in all types of enclosures, but the best are with the least amount of screen possible, though as long as you can keep it real humid, youll be fine. also i bought geckos off of someone who had males and females together, 2 and 2, but they were like that since birth. i immediately seperated them into two groups. and now i got both males breeding with one of the females each. best of luck to you.
