I am in southern California and found a turtle in my front yard. We don't really have any turtles in our area, but may be someone's pet. What kind of turtle is this so I can properly care for it until the owner is located.

It seems you do have turtles in your area. You have a Pacific pond turtle, Actinemys marmorata, which is native to California. You need to search for the stream or pond it came from and release him. It's not legal to keep them in California.
