Rain Storms and Breeding

saintz Dec 09, 2008 10:37 PM

Today I was cleaning my Crested Geckos Cage today and noticed that they began to make noises and to copulate. I ve never noticed them before but as soon as this occured a low pressure storm moved in. Is their any connection?

I wondered this myself as the adult pair I got off a guy last year apparently only mated for him when he put one of those Exo Terra waterfalls into the viv, which upped the humdity drastically.

However, I've had no probs breeding them without the waterfall, and suspect he didn't keep them at the right humidity to start with so my case is probably different to your own.

How long have you had them together? If it's only a recent introduction, it could just be coincidence that you seen them courting when a storm was on it's way.

They were recently purchased as a pair and the previous owner had them together for about six months prior.
I was not trying to breed them so I lowered there temps to avoid this issue. Which did not work for I have gotten eggs with more on the way.
I do noticed whenever a storm comes through they are vocal and copulate. Never fails and I check them daily.

If you don't want eggs the most effective thing would be separating them, not just cooling temperatures.

I believe high and low pressure weather conditions affect all animals. It is obvious that animals such as birds can sense a storm coming through. Sometimes the best time to fish is just before a storm. So why shouldn't these conditions affect geckos as well.
