Scarlet kings do they hide 24/7?

Malays Dec 23, 2008 04:37 PM

Hello
I keep few of the larger kings and wanted to ask if the scarlet kingsnake is type of reclusive small snake that hides 24/7 or close to that ?

I ask as was interested in one but used to bigger kings which are out and about close to daily.

Thank you

If you want to see them crawling around try checking them out at night with low light or red light. Buddy.

Yes, pretty much. They are almost entirely nocturnal and very shy beyond that.

Also, if you are getting a SK, you should make sure of two things -
1. It eats pinkies. Many SKs are tough to switch to pinkies/fuzzies and many wild caught ones that are sold are too small to eat them anyway. They will readily consume small skinks.

2. You have a secure cage. SKs must be the best escape artists of the snake world!

Thank you both . They seem bit more secretive than I am used to with bigger snakes but I suspected as much which is why asked.

Will opt not to get one .

Great SK pic.

In college I actually had a scarlet king (which I'd collected myself in the Okeetee area) that spent most of its time coiled in plain sight on top of a slab of pine box. I hasten to add that this snake was a glaring exception!

And to support Chris' other point, I no longer have this animal because it managed to escape from a tightly-closed plastic shoe box!
