GDG escaped; any tricks to recapture?

jmpeniche Jan 11, 2009 08:09 PM

You know the old saying: "If you own herps it's not a matter of IF they escape, but WHEN." I've had this Giant Day Gecko male for more than three years and this is his third escape. Each recapture I just happened to see him perched loose in the house and got him.

He's in our basement up in the rafters. I was just wondering if anyone has ever devised some trick to recapture a particular herp. For example, should I leave a small quantity of peach baby food (he loves it) in the same place I saw him last w/hopes he determines that is a food spot? (And ambush him when he comes back for more!)

This is the largest, prettiest male I've ever seen; if I recapture will post pix. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi, I know what your going through I had a female who when I opened the tank lid one day to clean her she scooted out and up the wall in the reptile room. One difference I could usually see where she was, but what a little stinker, she was darn quick and enjoyed her new found freedom, lol.

What I noticed was she would come down and sit on the other lizards strip lights when I was not in the room, I would catch her sitting there when I came in, I finally got a large fish net and caught her.
But what I would suggest is maybe have a strip light on over an open tank for him, any other light may burn him, leave food in there, put the tank up on a table near where you saw him in the rafters and hopefully he will be attracted to the light and food, (they are not stupid)

I sure hope ya get the bugger, lol. let us know, yeah a pic would be COOL, when he's back home

Not yet, Eve, but thanks for asking. Everytime I go down to my herp room (in the basement) I scan the rafters for him. I left food out near where I saw him last, but after a week it wasn't touched. I haven't given up! Will let you know.

hey u guys will think this is nuts, but my cat is how i find them. he is terrified of all reptiles...but he will sit there and meow at them letting me know that one is loose... he found my grandis and my corn snake, and my ball python for me so far
i guess letting him get bit repeatedly by leopard geckoes, berber skinks and ball pythons paid off lol
the funny thing is he lets me know often before i even know they are out...( he comes running and hiding behind me...)
