Salmonella outbreak

boxienuts Jan 16, 2009 05:55 PM

I don't post here, because I don't keep these species, but this seems to be the most active turtle group, so I thought you guys might get a kick.
Have you guys heard about the salmonella outbreak caused by contaminated peanut butter.
Most of the peanut butter linked to the bacteria, was distributed in bulk to certain institutions rather than the jars of peanut butter in stores, as the two news quotes show below.
"Health officials recommended nursing homes, hospitals, schools, universities and restaurants that purchase the two brands discard them."
"To date, common brands of peanut butter sold to consumers in grocery stores do not appear associated with the outbreak."
So, it seems as though for children, eating school lunch or eating lunch with grandma at the nursing home, is just as, if not more dangerous than handling reptiles.
So since we banned the sale of small turtles and we would really like to ban all reptiles, maybe we should just consider banning all peanut butter, or maybe we should just ban lunches, or at the very least ban lunches at school and nursing homes. Or, we could ban all lunches over 4 ounces, that way you might just get a little sick instead of dead. Then we would have a 4" and a 4oz rule that makes sense. Please excuse my sarcasm, I guess I woke up ornery today.

Hey, Jeff. Hilarious. You're so right.

Hey Curtis,
The thing is, it's really all about responsible parenting and cleanliness. Unfortunately turtles have taken a bad rap, and as a result, captive breeding was discouraged and wild populations were raped. At this point the antiquated law is pretty much ignorned for the most part by all sides, but it would be nice to see it dissolved, so it doesn't have to feel like a drug deal, but I don't work in congress, nor is it probably a high priority right now, considering the other issues at hand, like our economy. I'm not stating anything that probably most people here don't already know, but sometimes it feels good to "get it off your chest"

The Salmonella in reptiles scare is bull[bleep] and over hyped. You must keep your reptile in its feces and never clean its cage its whole life before salmonella is a possibility, and by then, worse diseases and viruses would be more likely to be present....people get scared too easily....
