A while ago we were flipping boards in cloudy weather. the area in Oregon Salem. the snake was reddish brown with many stripes-even on its belly. please help me with this

How big was the snake? What color were the stripes? Were they "stripes" (running the length of the snake) or "bands" (encircling the body)(alot of people use the word stripe to describe bands)? Most likely a garter snake of some sort if it was striped.
