rescued iguana

tbone21 Jan 21, 2009 04:06 PM

I have a rescued juvinile green iguana. I have her in a pvc and fence cage. She has two shelves with a ramp going between the bottom and the shelves. The cage has ranges of temperatures from 75 to 105. My worries are she doesnt explore the cage. She just lays and basks and eats off of the food dish also on that shelf. I am worried that she wont get enough water which is in a big container at the bottom. I have a decent amount of reptile experience but this is my first iguana. Do I have any worries? any suggestions?

Well, first I have to ask how long you've had the iguana; it's possible that it's still stressed. Also, what are you feeding the iguana? Depending on what it's getting, it may have all the moisture it needs in it's diet. Plus, you may just be missing the iguana going to drink. If it's just a juvenile like you say, then it shouldn't need that large a quantity of water daily. Finally, are you misting the enclosure or anything? If so, the ig may just be drinking the dew.

Hope that helps. If you stay concerned about moisture intake, sliced red grapes on top of greens are usually a great way to get moisture into the diet.

She eats a variety every day. She eats like a spring mix of greens every day with grapes blueberries strawberries apples and sometimes some squash some peas. She is about three feet long and I have had her for about 2 weeks only. She seems to be healthy not counting her physical problems (from her abuse) and she is deficating and all. I was just worried because she wasnt really exploring her cage she just basically satays on the one shelf. I should of just put the shelf on a wall with the lights above it lol.
