A Baby Whites.....please help

snogec Jan 23, 2009 10:38 PM

I visited a Pet Store a few days back to purchase some superworms for my leo and they had this tiny whites tree frog there.
I thought he looked a bit bad and he was really dirty so I decided to give him/her a home.
I bought what they called forest bark for a substrate, the internet suggested bamboo as favourable climbing limbs but the best I could come up with was birch branches for him at the moment.
I have transplanted pieces of my spider plant in his setup but the poor little guy looks so lost.
He doesn't bother with his little pond like water dish at all and all he wants to do is hide or sleep.
He simply refused to eat superworms and will only eat one cricket per feeding which is daily.
I am beginning to wonder if he may of been happier at the prt store.
I have been keeping leo's and breeding them for years successfully but I can't seem to get to first base with the little frog.
Can anyone please tell me what T am doing wrong?
I am dusting his crickets with the calcium,I have a uv heat bulb, his water is clean, and I offer him food but he doesn't eat much.
Please help if you can.

One cricket a day is not terrible, typically they will eat more but one a day should sustain her. What are your temps like? often they will not each much if it is too cold.

Also, a lot of frogs do not like the substrate sticking to their skin, so I usually put a layer of sphagnum or leaf litter on top. And, ampphibians (excluding some Rana) dont need UVB. I'm sure your frog will appriciate it, but just know that they dont absolutly require it in order to be healthy.

Thank you for your help everyone.
Kermit's temps run around 86 daytime and around 79 at night.
All the bedding they had at the pet store was the forest bedding(had to soak it in water for it to expand)guess its also called bed a beast but it keeps him so dirty all the time.
Is there anything else cleaner?
Also,he will change his color from a green to a brown..why is that?
He will not touch superworms and I can't get mealworms at the store.
He is on a strict diet if crickets and nothing else.
Is this good for him?
How can I supplement his vit d3?
I am using calcium powder to dust the crix in but will that allow him sufficent d3 as well.
Thanks to all.

Your temps are great, so thats not the problem.

For substrate I like to use sphagnum and leaf litter. I used to use the bricks of dirt sold at most pet stores, but the frogs really seemed to hate it when it would stick to them. So I switched to sphagnum (orchid moss works well also, you can find both at home depot, lowes ect) and leaf litter.

I have five whites, and every single one of them changes color, for no obvious reason. Possible causes are temp, humidity, diet, time of day, and camoflauge, but keep in mind that some whites are naturally a purplish or brown color, so if your frog is darker and seems healthy there's nothing to worry about.

If he is just eating crickets thats fine, superworms are high in fat so he's not missing anything but lipids if he doesn't eat them.

If you are dusting with calcium it should have D3 as well, I use Rep-cal becuase the calciumhosperous ratio is better than a lot of other supplements out there.

Do you have any pics of the little guy?

My White's is a little fat piggy and he still sleeps and hides most of the time. As long as your frog is eating on its own, it sounds like it's fine. The little guy is probably just getting used to the new and improved home it has and may be a bit stressed from the move. It should settle into the tank in a couple weeks and will start coming out at night.

Also, it may be a wild caught frog and could be afraid of people. I have a golden tree frog that is terrified of me getting anywhere near her, though she's graduated to not launching across the tank for cover when she sees me.
