Should I euthanize my sulcata hatchling?

ChazB322 Jan 24, 2009 12:09 AM

I have a baby sulcata that has been sickly pretty much since I got him, and has gotten drastically worse in the past month and a half. He hasn't eaten in weeks, never moves, and his shell is becoming extremely soft. I went to a foolish vet (they said he was healthy, and they were reading off a care sheet the entire time). I've tried upping the heat (he now never gets below 85 or so). Nothing is working, and he keeps getting worse. I'm thinking the humane thing to do at this point would be to put him out of his misery. I'm fairly certain he's sick to the point of dying, but being a tortoise, he can probably hold on for a while. Is this the best option to choose? And if so, what is the most painless way to do it?

Why don't you try another vet? I only take my reptiles and birds to exotic vets that I've seen in action before, or have been recommended to me. A good vet may be able to help, and if not they can humanely euthanize the little guy.

some hatchlings just dont ever really catch on anybody that has bread torts. has seen a few....If you think that he is truly a gonner and he is just going to suffer than putting him under might be the best thing for him...it is not anything enjoyable for an animal lover to do but it at some point has to be in the best intrest of the animal. what i have done with sickly or diseased animals that wont respond to antibiotic or nobody knows what is wrong with them is put them in the freezer for the most humane way to let them pass.
