common names?

teaspoon Jan 27, 2009 09:55 AM

I've been researching and plan to get a pair of williamsi, but have been researching L. kimhowelli and L. mombasicus too. Do these two species have a common name? Is one of them the neon day gecko? Williamsi is called the "Electric Blue gecko", right?

Common names dont mean anything really. Its just a way to sell things. Some species can be called many many names like Gekko vittatus AKA white lined, skunk, skeleton gecko and so on. The only real way to know what species it is is the scientific names. They never get mixed up and you'll know what is being talked about. Like "vorax" in the classifieds. They are G. marginata, there is only one true pair of Gehyra vorax in this country and captivity but they wont stop calling them that.

If everyone used scientific names it would be much easier.

In the thread just below this one there is a link to a care sheet about another species of Lygodactylus (not Williamasi), it's pretty good.

so then are there different little blue geckos that are being called electric, neon, ect that are being grouped together that are realy not of the same geneus speice. I'm only asking becouse my little male is a mutch darker blue than most of the pics ive seen on the net and he has thinner black marks on his face above the eyes.He was listed as a neon blue dwarf gecko. I'm sure as they grow in popularity moor will come out on these neat little guys. I can say for sure that i will be getting many moore. they are quit bold and verry active. I have mine in a 40 gal live terrerium and he realy seems to like it and will run up to greet me when i walk in the room.the seller was feeding them small crickets and i have given him a few but have for the most part been feeding fruit flies and he loves them.

As far as I know, the only blue gecko is Lygodactylus williamasi, but there are many common names for that one gecko, which is why common names are not good to use.

the reason that I ask is that I've been looking to buy geckos and they usually just have a common name( though I prefer to buy from a breeder that lists both). I googled "Lygodactylus williamsi" and got some stuff about a "williamsi" that was in a different genus. I was confused at first because sometimes they change the scientific name or name a subspecies, stuff like that.

So, what is a neon day gecko? I've seen pictures that look like it from Phelsuma and Lygodactylus.

There is a "williamasi" in another genus, but it is definately not a dwarf gecko, I'm not even sure it's a gecko. If you need info on care, google-ing "lygodactylus care" might be more helpful because all of them are cared for in roughly the same way.

The problem with common names is people probably call both the phelsuma (which is a large, light blue colored gecko, I can't remember the species) and the Lygodactylus williamasi "Electric blue geckos" or "Neon day geckos" or whatever they want. So to answer you question, you really can't, it could be either. I mean hell, I could call a Lygotactylus williamasi a "dwarf day gecko", if I wanted, but then what about all the smaller Phelsuma species, well I can call them that too.

Ok i agree like i said mine is apx 2" and darker blue than most of the adds i have seen on these classifieds. he has the black throught and black eye lines but his base is moore cobalt to med dark blue not that light sky blue.there were apx 10 for sail in the same cage and all look the same. asking the shop owner is a waste of time,Iwent to high school with him and advise him most of the time. I just think i'll keep looking for a pair for sail at the same time and try to get an extra female and see if she likes this male.
