How long do RES live in captivy?

Lgbrooksi Jan 27, 2009 10:49 AM

Just wondering since I just found out that a friend of mine has one that he got back in 1980 -- is this an unusually old turtle or are they more like box turtles and tortoises in regard to their potential for an exceptionally long captive life?

Thanks...

Turtles can live a lot longer than 30 years in captivity and in the wild. They have a lifespan pretty similiar to us people, and can even out live us.

I am currently in the US Navy, so unfortunetly I have sold off my collection of herps. But over the years have kept many different species of turtles, geckos, lizards, amphibs, and even fish. Looking forward to getting back in the hobby once im out though!

Thanks for that input -- after posting this, I did see the earlier thread (May 2007) about the guy that has a RES that is around 50 years old so I figured my friend's turtle isn't "old" just yet...(but it's still pretty cool that he's had it for that long)

The same great aunt that's willing me way too many ornate boxies has an RES she wound up with while my great uncle was overseas in Korea It's still doing OK.

Sliders commonly live to be 20 yrs or older. There was one in Catonsville, MD, that, as of a couple of years ago, was 67 years old. I suspect that's the record, but can't prove it.

Thanks for that input Katrina (although you must really "troll" through some old posts to have found this one -- lol)
