Me again...Feeding

davenkelly Jan 28, 2009 06:29 AM

The lights and getting the temps correct did wonders for Grissom.

Now for a feeding question. Some days Grisson is a PIG, some days he eats like a bird. I have been feeding him (crickets and meal worms..some times just crickets, or just meal worms, sometimes both at once) in a seperate Steralite tub for the most part. If I put the food in his enclosure he shows no intrest. And I have been told not to leave the un-eaten crickets in the enclosure over night because they will eat his toes???

Just a few days ago he took food from our hands for the first time...and he PIGGED OUT. Thes last night, feeding in the seperats tub, all he ate was like 3 or 4 of the meal worms. Oh, and let me add that last night was also the first time we did the powdered Vitimans. Could they have had a funny taste that he will gwt used to?

I want to hand feed him just occasionly, but rely on him to eat from his cage for the most part.

1) So, to kind of train him to eat in his cage, should I hand feed him in the bottom of his cage to get him used to the fact that is where his food will be?

2) Should I just put the food in the cage and he will search and destroy when he gets hungury enough?

2) Is the cricket thing mith or fact?

Again, thank you in advance,
Dave

1. That "missy" person should get the site back up; lazy... or MiZZy could also do the same.
2. For my new babies I feed them in the cage using a stainless steel bowl with 6 week old crickets (back legs pinched off) and only females. I do not dust but 2-3 times a week. I depend on gut loading them with the roach diet I get from my roach guy. He makes it by hand, all organic and healthy. My crickets and roaches love it and they are fat and juicy. I have never heard of crickets eating the toes off of another lizard. I suppose it could happen, but I have never seen/ heard it.

Hope this helps....

Hay Mizzy thanks..Sorry for the thrashing I gave your screen name.

I was hoping you would respond at some point. I have read almost every post under frillies, and I have always found your answers and oppinions down to earth. I guess next time I want to get your attention I will have to find another way to butcher your name.

And really...Get bussy on that site, ya looser...LOL

And I did have the same Idea about cutting leggs off the crickets. But whats the deal with feeding only female crickets? And how do you tell the differance? High power magnifing glass? Or get Jiminey Cricket to buy them a drink and and see if they go home with him and get luckey?..LOL

As I try the "eat on your own thing", at what point should I get conserned that he has not ate? A day, two, three? I am sure age will play into your answer, and that I can not say for sure. That was one question I failed to ask when we got him, but I am waiting on an answer from the dude via Email. Here is what I can tell you and you might have an educated guess...

Got him Jan 10 at the Atlanta Show. He was 10 inches and 22.9 grams.

Last week 10.5 inches and 23.9 grams

I just now measured and weighed him again 11 inches and Holey Smokes....29 grams...I double checked and made sure the scale was zeroed. Growth spirt?

OK..I will quit rambling....In a second...LOL

Mizzy I saw in a post you have a care sheet (on your site, that aint up so I cant go to it,,,geeez) Could I get you to Email it to me?...Please??? If you do I will back off on the web site comments.....Maybe...lol

Thanke Dave

if your lizard is gaining weight then he should be doing fine. Female crickets have a fatter bodies and rounder heads. They also have a extra tube coming out of their rear that they use to deposit eggs (I think). Males have 2 wing like things that come off their back/rear; females have 3. Males also have shorter/flatter heads.

send me an email to remind me about the care sheet, I will send it to you. kingii@frilldragon.com
