Gila Registration

gilabound Feb 01, 2009 03:31 PM

Hi I am new to the forum. I am just curious if gilas have to be registered in the AZA studbook to be considered legal. I recently came across a pair of banded breeders for sale than are located close by. The owner said he got them from a breeder. The animals look captive bred, but how can one be sure if they are indeed. I simply do not want any surprises down the road as it is a big investment. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I'm pretty certain the don't have to be registered but you certainly outta be able to prove your animals are captive or legal stock somehow. I wouldn't buy them if I had any doubts, like buying a mercedes without a title bro.

The studbook is just that, a record of breedings and holdings for Horridum ssp. in the U.S.A. The legality aspect will come from state/local ordinances as these are the laws that govern the keeping of these animals. But, I would highly recommend that you submit your animals to Janice at the ASDM for inclusion in the studbook. It is a good way to maintain a "legal" trail of your animals as most breeders submit data to her every year which show how many animals they produced and which animals they were, where the offspring went and who they were sold to. Although you can list yourself as "private" if you want.
