Humidity VS Temperature

tyrrell109 Feb 03, 2009 11:32 AM

Hello everyone my name is stephen im new to the forum and had a question iv been trying to find a solution for. Im getting my first GTP in about a week from Rico at signal herp and iv gotten all the kinks worked out in my tub except one. My temp range is 80-88 deg. so the gradient is good (according to the 100 husbandries iv read)but when i mist the cage it drops my temp in the basking area to about 81 deg. and gradualy rises to about 83-85 deg. till it starts to go through the drying period. Now heres the question. Do u guys think that i could use that temp for the night time drop and just mist at night? Any other ideas and respons's would be a great help.

PS: I would like to put a pic of the neo up but i cant figure out how if i could also get some help with that too it would be much appreciated.

Its so nice to see someone setting up and testing the enclosure before the baby arrives.

If you spray the thermostat probe directly, the temperature will appear to drop. Use a temperature gun to get accurate temps around your enclosure and you'll probably find a less drastic temperature drop than you think.

As for night drop..you mention you're getting a neo. If you mean an '08 hatchling, you dont need a night drop. Until you get the hang of chondro husbandry, go ahead and keep the temperatures consistent.

If you can upload pix of your enclosure, you may get a few more people to chime in with tips. Of course asking Rico's feedback on your setup would be a great idea too.

Ok i fugured out how to put one pic up but it wont let me put in more that that. here is the new neo im gettin .

Ty Gfx for the advice. I tried a new method of misting today where u wet the paper towel(substrate im useing)by pouring water on the substrate enough to damp and then i misted the sides of the tub and a spray once where the snake will probably be basking(near the probe)its keppin it in the 85 deg.(that is good range right?)now it only takes about 4 mins to hit it from when i open tub to spray. im gonna take a pic of my tub and see if i can figure out how to get it on here. ill try and find a temp gun. if u know where i can get one it'd be apreciated.

For neos, 85 is a good temp. I personally don't like to go any higher. You can get a good temp gun at radio shack for around $20.

Sounds like you're working out the issues. Definitely get a temp gun. I picked up a Raytek minitemp MT4 off of ebay or amazon for somewhere around $40 I think. I like it because it has a laser pointer so you can get a better idea of exactly what its measuring.

Nice snake. I love those mainland critters. I've got an '05 Manokwari-type who's ridiculously vibrant. Great choice.

Ok iv got the tub done i think. Humidity goes from around 90% when i mist and 65% by the end of the 12hr dry period. Temp's stay between 84.2-87.1 deg mist to dry with an average of 85 deg. Let me know what u guys think ill have a pic of the setup on in a while(when i figure out how to put pics in that arent off the internet). I must say that doing all this is getting me pretty amped up for my neo. im paying for him/her tommorow so i should be getting it monday hopfully.

I keep the humidity up with neos at around 80% consistantly. I let older animals, yearling and older dry out to around 60-65%. Babies can get dehydrated easily.
