Yellow Crust and Abseces. HELP

blackcancer Feb 05, 2009 01:50 PM

Hello, my girlfriend got a Frilled Dragon almost a year ago, and it has had some very light colored yellowish crust that periosically forms around the mouth from time to time and seems to rub off him quite easily. We thought it may have been environmental issues and tried changing some things, but now the lizard seems to be getting worse, with these abseces or bumps forming on the tail and back leg. Not knowing if the animal has enjured itself or has some sort of issue we have put some triple antibiotic on the wounds in the meantime. The lizard has often liked to jump to the top of his enclosure and dangle from the screen which seems to have resulted in some loss of claws as well as shedding issues. So this little guy is a mess, and any information would be great. Also, I dont know if its a cause for alarm but the lately the substrate seems to have alot of these tiny gnat like creatures buzzing around and I figured they were something brought in with the crickets we keep near his enclosure but am not sure.

i kno not many people wanna hear this but i would get him to the vet as soon as possible...you could try soaking him but it sounds like he has some sort of infection...out of curiosity do u know if hes captive bred and born or is he wild caught/imported/farmed? that can and will make a huge difference in his health as well

Heya, thanks for the input! Yes we are trying to find a good Herp Vet in the area, as we just found out the only one has recently stopped practicing. And she has indeed been soaking him alot lately, but Im scared the whole thing was started by maybe too much humidity. I believe this critter is Captive Bred, but I could be wrong. Also I think he is more of the New Guinea type because of the coloration seeming darker than normal. Anyway, thank you for the input!

Savannah, GA area. We used to have a Dr. Binks in the area that was supposedly really good, but we have to find a new vet now that he has retired.

do you use a compact florecent bulb for UVB sorce? also do you clean the water often? it does sound like some sort of infection. also do NOT use triple antibiotic on these. the petrolium in the ointment makes it hard for wounds to heal or such. if you MUST you should treat it with anti-bacterial soap (unsented and foamingg is BEST) and only with a Qtip. but with out pictures of whats going on i dont really want to tell you much else then that. soaking in a large tub of water that is warm to touch (not hot but not cool) MAY help too. but what you really need is some blood work done....

have you taken anything from outside and brang it into the frills enclosure? wood or rocks?

hope you get it sorted out quickly..
