Avocados and Mealworms

RMCADguy Feb 06, 2009 12:35 PM

Hello everybody, just a couple questions:

Have any of you ever tried feeding avocados to your chucks? I just tried some this morning with Oliver and he seemed so eager to gobble them up, but was very dismayed by the texture and couldn't commit to eating a piece. have you guys had any luck with them?

Also, some of my chucks really want super worms, but cant seem to work up the courage to finish the job. They will grab it, throw it around and then leave it without eating it. Have you guys had your chucks do this? Did they ever suck it up and eat the worm?

Thanks

Phil

Phil,
Please don't feed avocado to your lizards. They are highly toxic to birds and thought to be so to reptiles as well. I am glad that he didn't chomp it.

N&A told me that chucks shouldn't have bugs. I know that some people do occasionally feed their chucks and uros bugs, but if they develop a taste for them, it is very hard to break them of the habit and get on a healthy diet. I have a desert ig female that eats supers, but DI poop in the wild has been found to contain some critter matter. They are primarily herbivore, but do eat bugs especially when they are coming out of brumation or are gravid.

Oh geez, the avocado thing I was not aware of, thanks very much for the heads up, I have fed them to other lizards without incident so I wasn't worried about it. But now I will be.

About the insects, on my occasional visits to Nick's place, I have seen him feed superworms to his chucks, not in any excess, but a few here and there as treats are fine. Many of his chucks will stand up on two legs to reach the mealworm, it is quite entertaining.

Thanks again for the advice on avocados!

Phil

Well, I must say, my Mauzi girl, desert ig will POUT if I don't give her a super now and then! But the other dis and chucks aren't interested, so I say okay. I do know that some people do use bugs as treats, and their lizards look great. They don't make it a habit, though.

Yeah, the avocado thing doesn't occur to people because they are so healthy for us! I knew about it because I keep parrots and did some research when I started keeping lizards. They are very much alike in many ways!
