Double clutching.

NYCMedic Feb 07, 2009 07:08 AM

I just had my first clutch deposited a few days ago(13 eggs). This is the firsat time i've attempted to breed chondros. I usually double clutch my colubrids but i cant find any evedence of people doing it with GTP's. Has anyone out there tried this. I can see why it could be difficult considering how much weight she loss after egg deposition. Bit I figure if I can take a month to fatten her up a little and then reintroduce her like I do with my other snakes I may get a second clutch out of her.Any thoughts?
Thanks

Trooper Walsh did it once, but the time between both clutches was 10 months. The female died.

Brandon is partially correct. Trooper actually did it twice while at NZP. One female died as a result like Brandon mentioned but another female actually produced three clutches in just under 14 months, 2 fertile & 1 slug (without male introductions)clutch. As a result she lost all her teeth (confirmed by x-ray) and was assist fed for another 5 year's. She never reproduced again and was eventually euthanized. IMO double clutching would be a VERY bad idea!

Boid's are a far different beast than colubrids and I would bet none should be double clutched. I'm sure someone will eventually go on to try and disprove that statement.

Im sure you could do it if your female was very healthy, but I think it would take way too much out of the female and would end badly. Try to incubate the first clutch first.
