Repti-Fogger: Zoo-Med vs Exo-Terra

AndyH Feb 08, 2009 10:51 PM

I travel regularly, and I've been considering getting one of these two systems. I wouldn't expect the fogger to replace misting, but are these an effective substitute to maintain the humidity in my tanks while I'm away from home?

I'm hoping a few people here have some experience with one of these products and can provide some feedback. Do they actually work? The Zoo-Med model costs close to twice as much. Is it worth the extra ~$30?

Maybe I'll write Consumer Reports about adding a reptile husbandry section. Ha.

Here's my latest addition exploring his new cage.

I would be careful using them at all. Once I had one short out when I first started keeping Emeralds but luckly it was in a tupperware that was closed off with "air holes" for the mist to escape. Best bet is to get a large dish and place an aquarium pump and airstone. Even if the water dries out it will not heat up and short out. Foggers if they run dry on water can and in my case will burn out and possibly short. IMHO stay away from them.

I agree. I have had 2 of them and will not use them again. I too had one short out. And I had one nearly burn a hole in the floor of the enclosure. Both of them had appropriate amounts of water too.

The REPTIFOGGER is awesome! You do not have to worry about it burning up. It has an automatic shut off when the water is low. It sits outside of the cage and has adjustable settings. Yes you can use the one liter bottle it comes with or a 2 liter soda bottle. I have used both. If you use a soda bottle it is a thinner plastic and will cave in after a week or so so change it out every few days if you do that. You can put them on a timer too if you want! Humidity stays way high but of course you want to mist them too at least twice a day. Hope this helps!
