Smallest breeders???

SoLA Feb 08, 2009 11:17 PM

I recently got in a group of amazon tree boas (1.4). 4 of them were babies from a large female I also got in. They were housed together and are quite small for how old they are.

One female weighed 312g when I got her in and my most recent weight on her was 333g. She even ate a big 40ish gram mouse since this weighing. Anyway, she had babies last night. 3 live and 1 stillborn. All weighed roughly 15g. She is now 205g so I will be looking for babies in the room tonight since it was not sealed of expecting babies.

I had a hunch she might be pregnant, but she just seemed so small.

The only male (aside from emerald tree boas housed with this group) was 172g when it came in.

Anyone ever have amazons reproduce at these low weights? Also, what is the smallest litter of tree boas you have had? I want to know how long I need to look around for babies lol.

It does not apply, as I no longer work with that museum.

I found a pretty nice red colored baby climbing a wire just now. There are so many places they could be. Field herping the house should be fun the next few nights.

so 4 live and 1 stillborn...total weight...75g...and she could have lost double that. I wish I had prepared for this lol.

Hey Gavin. There was a similar discussion recently on the Amazon Alliance forum. If I remember correctly someone had a 400-ish gram female who produced a litter. The thread was entitled "Largest Litter" if you want to check it out.

I hope you find all the babies!

Unreal!!! I bought a yellow female from someone and I thought the animal was going to be like a small rat eating 5' animal. Well she was a proven mom and is way smaller than my 2 1/2 year olds! She can handle adult mice or rat pups. Blew my mind she had babies over a year before I got her!

Crazy Matt. I have always been someone who keeps animals on a little slower feeding and slightly cooler temps (especially the Latin American animals that spend the majority of their time in dense shade.

So I think of myself as someone who tries to mimic a more realistic feeding they would be getting in the wild, but seeing how small they can be to reproduce, maybe I am pumping them up more than I even should be if I want to stay more realistic.

But still, some of the animals I got in are super small for their age. One female is like 4 years old and 115g. I better watch out for a litter of 12 from her tonight!
