basilisk ??s HELP!!

mcdurmot Feb 12, 2009 03:06 AM

hello everyone this is my first thread i hope someone can help me, i got a new basilisk, its a baby 3 inches snout to vent, still brownish, has a very strong appitite, very alert, balanced, terrarium basking sites, cool spots and ambient temp are correct, uv uvb bulbs on a night/day cycle (infared at night)
lots of water, which he doesnt seem to like, humidity is right

the two things im worried about is

a: hes very lazy, i have been feeding him alot (as much as he wants, up to 6 a day) he seems hungry, but when theres no food he'll literally sit there for hours, not in the basking site though up high in the leaves... away from the light kinda by the opening of the door for the tank

b:he has NO fear of me or anything else, i can literally put my hand in front of him and he'll walk right up and fall asleep on my hand, if i pick him up he seems limp unless hes already bouncing off the walls which he does rarely.

am i feeding him so much hes too fat to bounce around?
is he sick?
and why is he so friendly?

thanks for the help

How warm it the cage? If the cage is warm enough then I would say you should take it to a vet. Its not natural for a basilisk to be so calm when handled.

sorry its a water dragon not a basilisk, and ambient temps around 75-78, proper basking sites and whatnot, hes actually perked up and grown alot since i posted that, started shedding, the reason i continue the thread is he is still VERY tame, he doesnt breath harder when i pick him up, he eats from my hand, and he seems to have alot more energy now, bounces all over the place, but if i were a little more naive id say he liked me, which sounds odd for a reptile... especially so young?

thx for the response

Would this by any chance be an Australian water dragon? I have one that is very tame and actually comes to me when I open his cage.As long as he's active and growing,I'd see it as a plus! Take care!, Jeff

no, its a chinese water dragon, and ya i suppose hes just calm... another question i have is when he started shedding he shed his tail portion fine, but the rest stayed on, like a straight line across the base of his tail, it still hasent started to come off yet but it looks all wrinkly, like hes an old man, his tail part is new and wrinkle-free. is that normal?

yes it is normal. pull it of if u can they dont mind too much usally. use a tooth brush an some olive oil.
