Do you remember your first love?

Rosebuds Feb 13, 2009 03:55 PM

(A friend asked me if I could post this message for her. What a wonderful story and adorable pic! Can you guess who that beautiful girl is? Hope you enjoy! ).

" I met her at the Nurseryland Garden and Pet Center. It was love at first sight. They had to kick me out the front door at closing time, but I was back the next day after school and every day after that until the weekend, when I could show up at opening time and stay until closing at 5:30. The sales staff finally took pity on me and let me put her on "Lay-away". One dollar (my weekly allowance) per week for four weeks, but eventually...SHE WAS MINE. The year was 1961 and I was twelve years old. One bite from that old Love Bug and I was hooked forever! Happy Valentines Day!"

story! I bet I know who it is. Still carries herself the same way to today. What a great picture and a great story! By the way Maureen I think your typical wood sealer or protector by Thompsons would be ok to seal the cages as long as you let it dry thouroughly before they are used.

Busted!! Thanks, Tom. I'll get some of that sealer. These new cages are really beautiful. I am lucky to have such a handy neighbor. Nice to hear from you! Maureen

What a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing.

Years ago Lou Hamby suggested I try keeping chucks since I have always enjoyed keeping desert lizards. A few months later I found and bought my first cb common chuck hatchling and I have been in love every since. Chucks are such amazing lizards and are by far my favorite reptile. They are beautiful and have the cutest personalities.

I agree! My first chuck is a beastie! He HATES me! LOL! But my second and third are just dolls! My little female granite loves to wedge herself between my thigh and the couch arm! She thinks that is her cave, and she'll come up to look around, look me right in the eye, lick me, and wiggle back in. The boy either likes to wrap himself around my neck or wiggles his belly into my knee and watches TV.

Donna, I know you won't give up on the lil Beastie. He'll come around if you hold him and cuddle him. It just takes time with some of them...they go through a "brat stage" if they are male, and my gal Ripper, well, you can guess how she got THAT name. She was CB by Tom Greb nine years ago, and had a female sibling who was a little sweetheart. Go figure. According to Tom, her mother didn't like to be handled either. But after 5 years, Ripper had mellowed, although she still looks askance when you pick her up. She is always running for her cave, but she is improving. Brats need love, too. Hey, that would make a good T-Shirt logo!! LOL

You are right, mlove, about their personalities. And they can be so different, even from the same clutch! A couple of years ago, I got 7 hatchlings from two of the mellowest parent Chucks I have ever had. Well, six of them had the parents' personalities. The 7th, one of the three smallest, would lay in wait for the others, particularly the adults,-- who just shrugged it off as baby bravado,-- and he'd leap out from under the rocks and bite the skin on the side of the adults, and then spin around and hide back under the rocks. He spent the rest of his time chasing the other babies and head-butting them. The fellow I gave him to witnessed the behavior and the fact that I held him up to my face and he lunged and bit my nose and drew blood! He named him "Lurch". The worst part?...Lurch turned out to be female! LOL

Turned out to be a "female"! HEHEHE!
