A dull dragon???

robnpg Feb 16, 2009 09:29 AM

I have owned my frilled dragon since Nov of 2007. When I purchased him, he could have only been 3-6 months of age. Every since I've had him, he's never had much of an appetite. He eats maybe 3 crickets per week max. I have tried using superworms and he wouldn't even touch them.
I've even noticed that activity-wise he doesn't do much either. he rarely climbs his branch. The only way you would even know he is alive is if you picked him up, or you are lucky enough to catch him in mid-movement, which he will then immediately stop....
He is currently 11.5 inches long from snout to the tip of his tail...
Should I be concerned here, or do I just have a lazy dragon??

my first guess would be an internal parasite, but i could be wrong.

I would check for:

1)internal parasites
2) UV light full spectrum
3)cage temps: basking spot (100-110 F) and cooler end (78-82 F)
night time70-75)
4)Also, check humidity

best wishes

good points aquapet, I need to check my main basking site. Looking today, it was only 80 degrees. I need to get another lamp. Overnight, it was probably getting to chilly as well.
Any recommendations for night heat?

Oh, and a vet checked him and found no parasites. The vet(who was supposedly the center's reptile expert for what's that's worth) also said he looks healthy.
If I knew how to post a pic, I would

what are the night time temps like?

If its cold you could use a inexpensive, small space heater to bring the general area temp up, but keep an eye on the space heater.

Hopefully, others can offer better heating advice.

I cant offer really good advice on heating because I live in south florida where it is hot and humid. My lizard is generally outside except when it gets 65 and below. I then i bring him in and he sleeps on my book case and then i bring him out again.

it would help alot if you posted a picture...in order to post a picture all you have to do is upload the picture to a site like photobucket.com and copy and paste the IMG code into the message box wen u reply...temps and lack of good UVB and humidity can b a huge factor...did u get him from a breeder or pet store? do u know if he is captive born and bred or not?

You want the ambient temps to be higher; so if it is basking all the time then the ambient temp is too low. In the wild they dont sit in the sun for hours; its too hot. Temps are a huge part of proper husbandry; anything away from proper husbandry will start to cause stress and lead to bad things.
Check a weather website for seasonal averages in PNG; it doesnt get that cool at night.

Hope this helps.
