Chameleon's Tail

sco0309 Feb 16, 2009 02:06 PM

Our female chameleon's tail seems to be decomposing (looks rotten or dead) The curl of the tail is now gone - The rest of her is good - She eats good, color is good, She gets vitamins with food - Any ideas of what this may be and what we can do to fix it?

Anything that causes a cham to lose parts of its tail is a major problem. There was either a traumatic injury that damaged the blood supply to the tissue causing it to die, or a serious infection. Either way, your cham is fighting a systemic infection most likely and will need an experienced herp vet to prescribe antibiotics. Not just any antibiotic, but one that is specific to the bacteria present in the dying parts of the tail tissue. We can't diagnose this on a forum. We can't possibly know what happened. Could have been a burn, an injury, insect bites, infection, anything.
