What kind of eaters are rosies?

Danne Feb 19, 2009 05:47 PM

I always suggest rosies to people for beginner snakes when they ask me what snake they should get. Their personalities IMO are far better than flighty corns, milks or kings, but are they better eaters than balls? I've never had one so I'm not sure about this, my BP is a nightmare though. I'm just curious because I don't like the fact that BPs are considered THE beginner snake when I think there are several others I would put before them in this title.

I just offered food to 10 rosys, and all 10 immediately ate.

They can sometimes be picky when they're neos, but a good brumation usually gets em eating just fine.
As long as they're kept in good conditions, once they start eating they'll typically eat everything offered... whether its food or not, lol. I had one try to eat a fleece blanket awhile back...

Sounds good to me! I just wanted to make sure that I was giving good suggestions to people who ask me. As long as they eat better than those stupid "captive hatched" ball pythons petsmart sells then I feel good about them

Most of those CH BPs at Petco or Petsmart will eat like gangbusters given tight hides, a nice temp range and proper humidity. I've tried about 10 or so over the years, all did very well once setup to their liking. I'm sure some will not, but my feeling is most will.

Too dry of conditions mean baby BPs not feeding. Alot of beginners do just that. Alot of Petcos do just that.

Rosyboas, as adults, can be more seasonal feeders, meaning they may refuse food for parts of the year and eat with gusto in others. No problem. Usually this describes males in proximity to females. Females tend to feed more consistently. In any case, as long as cage conditions are good, rosies will eat as much as they need to. Babies eat like crazy and should be fed like crazy.
