Keeping outdoors?????

adogunnaike Mar 12, 2009 03:21 PM

Anyone have any experience keeping chondros outdoors? I live in Miami and the temps/ humidity is fine, but Im curious to any other problems that could come with it. i live in a highrise building with a screened in balcony (no pest/ants, no birds/ cats, etc). I was thinking about putting one a screened enclosure. maybe a larger chameleon cage that already has the pvc coating. id also hook it up to a thermostat with some type of low wattage flood lamp for those chilly nights. I've had chondros in the past and i still have a vision 222 cage, but Id rather see a chondro in an outdoor set up. Any thoughts would gladly be appreciated.

I've seen emmies kept outdoors in FL that didn't look good to me. Then again they were imports and I don't know how long they have been outdoors. I think it could be done but believe it or not you will need to mist the animals down more then you think. A screen cage isn't going to hold any humidity. Good luck if you give it a try.

Thought I'd add IMO they animals I've seen kept outdoors just don't look near as nice as the ones kept inside, they just appear dry and dull to me.

I bought a missing system a while back when i had my vision cage hooked up so i figured Id hook that up again...Plus, it will keep them hydrated.

The natural humidity in the air in Dade County is more than sufficient to keep Corallus and M. viridis in good condition. I live in the Redlands and keep and breed many tropical Boids outside year round with great success. The only reason I don't keep Tree Boas or Pythons outside is only because I'm not working with any. Certainly you could do it...thanks

Here are a couple of pics of the enclosures and pics of my Diamond Pythons breeding in them...thanks

I don't see why you couldn't keep them outdoors. I know Kathy Love keeps her amazons outside year round and they do very well. I know of one other person keeping Emeralds outdoors and they too are doing fine. If the temps are good and the humidity is kept up, it should be fine. A small pool of water, waterfall or some other way of keeping the ambient humidity up should do the trick. I would love to be able to do that here, but the weather is not conducive to it.

In PA we call them cages pigeon coops....

must be nice at times to live in the warmth....

.....wait....I hate it too hot and too cold....Lancaster County has been pretty good to us the past years....not too much snow and the heat lasts less than Miami's....

still would be cool.....yard FULL of cages.......beware the feral cats.....they'd hate to end up in the wrong place....

good luck.......

.....(outside cages for torts would be the best thing about heated areas....)....
