Ovulation or Gravid?

killerchondros Mar 12, 2009 08:46 PM

In my 2nd year of owning my GTPs. While I never witnessed tail hanging penetration, there was activity and coiling between the two for months. I do see, and have for the last 2 weeks, some swelling. Not the HUGE swelling like I've seen in some pics, but I could have missed it. The dam in question ceased eating in Jan and is still rather girthy in the mid section and is dull green with a blue tint all over. Im confused having read a number of publications whether the coloration change is a sign of ovulation, being gravid...or either? I still have the male with her to be sure. How can I tell or be sure if she is gravid at this stage?

A 650 gram male at 2 years in unheard of. Are you sure it's a male?

Is your male still actively courting your female? Most males lose interest when they "know" the job is done. To me, it sounds like your girl is on the right track and your next shed is your pre-lay. Without seeing the events take place in front of me, it's hard to be certain. Some females have gone through the hormonal blue shift only to resorb follicles and return to normal. I would at least set up a nestbox and be ready....get your incubator up and running. Good luck and have the camera ready.

Thanks Brandon.....I'll monitor them for a few day but wil need a incubator as I have other egg layers due next season. I've seen your YouTube build it your self video. I don't have the talent to pull that off so I am looking to buy one. After researching a bit and expecting multiple broods next year, decided to get a cabinet model..Nature's Spirit and a few other being considered. Anyone have a suggestion? At any given time I'll be hatching Hognose, Chondros, Indigos and Balls. I know more than one will be needed but can anyone recommend a brand?

Thanks,
