Can you sex my day gecko?

bloogmoo Mar 17, 2009 11:35 AM

Hi - I posted here a little while back because my gecko had gotten some oil on its feet, but he's doing great now. I was wondering if anyone could tell if he's a he or a she? And maybe while you're at it what subspecies he is?

It is hard to tell for sure without a better(macro) pic of the entire body from a top view as well as a closer bottom view of the preanofemoral area. From what I can tell, it may be a Phelsuma dubia. What gives me this hint is the lack of intense coloration and also usually a dead give away is the blue ring around the eyes and orange iris. It may be male based on the slight discloration of tan or yellowish around the ventral area. This is usually caused by mature males' preanofemoral pores enlarging and developing a waxy substance that is presumed to be used as a possible scent marker or musk for females of some sort. The last part is just a guess though.
