Getting them to Mate

spycspider Mar 20, 2009 04:58 AM

Hi,

I've an adult female and male spotted turtle that were brought together in the last month when the temperatures started warming up. As expected, the male is avidly trying to mate with the female but she isn't obliging. It's my first breeding attempt with these 2 so I was wondering if there are any suggestions to get her to be more receptive or should I just be patient since there's not much I can do? Do females eventually settle down?

My friend suggested playing Barry White for them, but any other tips would be welcome.

Thanks.

John

Don't worry, as long as they have been cycled properly and are in good health, they'll get it figured out. I have a colony of 2.6, and see FAR more "chasing" than actual consummation-in fact it's rare to see an actual hookup unless you spend a lot of time just sitting by the pond and watching....

Ok-here are a couple of pics. The colony now lives outdoors in a waterland tub, and they are doing great in the south Texas sunshine. The colony stands at 2.6, plus a couple of holdbacks from last season's hatchlings. As you know, all are captive bred from animals that originated in upstate NY.....

Yeah-NY regulations suck now! Half the reason I left. Hope you were able to take along your spotties to NC (not sure of the regs there regarding that species, though I know that overall they have pretty decent laws....).
