First Chameleon (Veiled)

SnakeTrail Mar 22, 2009 03:40 PM

I've read a ton of care sheets on them but something I haven't seen is care when he first arrives (he's being shipped).
He's suppose to be a 4 month old male...
I'm guessing he'll need water pretty quick?
How long do I wait to try & feed him? & how much?

Other questions.....
Food bowl on the floor or suspended?
How often do they shed?

Thanks!

Depending on how long he was in transit for and the temps, he may have slept most of the time. If he was packed well he won't necessarily be dehydrated or hungry. Have his cage all set up so you don't have to mess with it. Put him in it, let him warm up (unless it is close to the end of the day), and then mist the foliage heavily so he can drink if he wants. Don't force him as it will just stress him. If you get him at the end of the day I'd mist the foliage to raise the general humidity but not chill him, leave the lights off and let him sleep through to the next morning. Many chams don't eat much for the first few days so don't be worried. As long as he roams around exploring after basking, has lots of cover for security, correct humidity, he'll settle in. Don't disturb him too much (I know its hard not to keep peeking!). Provide the right temp/humidity, access to water, and one or two feeders in a feeding container after a day or so and he should settle in. You might ask the seller when he last ate.

Thanks for the info!
I notice your very helpful to the questions asked & that's much appreciated by all!
Hope your around for other questions I may come up with.

He's here now, spent about 17 hours in shipping.
He's cruising his cage now checking out things & soaking up some heat.

Another question...
I've saw all sorts insects that can be used, but never any mention of beetles, so I'm assuming no?

How long have you been keeping chams & what's in your collection?

Well, I wouldn't give him beetles as a regular diet as their shells will be hard to digest, but once in a while wouldn't hurt. Many beetles produce acidic chemicals that taste bad so he may not eat them after the first try.

Thanks for the compliment! I've kept chams since about 1994, starting with a male veiled. I don't have any chams at the moment as my current house and climate make it pretty difficult, but have kept veiled, jackson's, 2 subspecies of fischeri, verrucosus, melleri, deremensis, and cristatus.

I have about 60 ball pythons but this is our first Cham, I got it for my daughter as a early easter present.

It looks like he's going to have some cool colors, he's suppose to be a Sunburst/Turquoise Cross.
He ate 1 cricket on day one & it looks like he's settling in pretty well.
