Man... your stehlini is really huge! Do you know how old is he?

John-C Mar 28, 2009 04:40 PM

Hi Nino, how goes it?
I am not sure of his age. He is a LTC and was thought to be
maybe 5-6 years when I got him about three years ago.
I should see some breeding from him anytime now. His mate
had a rough season last year and only produced one 6 egg
clutch for me. She is usually good for a couple of 12 egg
clutches per year. She looks to be back to business as usual
so we will see how she does this season.

My second pair have already produced their first clutch of
eggs just over two weeks ago. All 11 eggs look great so far
as I'm sure they'll go full term. This female is one of my own
which I hatched in '07 so she's not quite 2 years yet. The male
is a nice young adult and not quite as big as the male I showed.
in the previous post.

I thought I'd post a pic of "The Beast" in hopes of getting this
lacerta forum out of the morgue. It's really been dead here.

How are your stehlini doing? Any eggs yet?
John

Hello John!
Unfotunately, no stehlini eggs this year. By the end of last year I reduced my collection to only one pair of young animals (they are my hatchlings 3 years old now) due to my new job and lack of free time. They are both very healthy and robust animals and I hoped to get some eggs this spring, but after winter period of rest male got agressive toward female - actually it looked like courtship at first, but in a week female was hiding most of the time and didn't eat anymore. After male bit off tip of the her tail I decided to separate them for the season.
I'm hoping better luck next year.
I have collected second clutch from my Timon lepidus, however, and have total of 27 good-looking eggs in the incubator.

There is still plenty of time to get some breeding from your
stehlini pair. Hopefully the male will behave himself next time.

Good deal on the Timon's eggs! When I worked them more
seriously my females would double and triple clutch and I
ended up with close to 70 babies one year from my breeding
trio. They can be so prolific if things are right.

Below is a picture of my young adult pair of stehlini. The male
is a ltc which I'm guessing is close to 3 or 4 years and the
female was cb here in '07. Moments after I took this shot
they bred. Gestation in the stehlini is relatively short (often
less than 4 weeks). This first clutch of 11 egg should hatch
in about 6 weeks since they were laid two weeks ago.

The females bounce back really quick after deposition so I
expect to see another breeding within two to three weeks.
She's already nice and plump as if nothing ever happened lol.

I'd say (according to the picture) that your male is quite a bit older than 3-4 years. My 3 years old is much less bulky and have less developed jowls. It could be because of the keeping conditions though. I tend to keep my animals on low-fat and low-protein diet (more than 80% of food is plant matter, mostly collected wild greens), so it's possible they grow slower.

John-C Mar 29, 2009 03:56 PM

You may be right Nino. At least about the care/diet.
When I first got this subadult male close to 2 years ago he
was considerably smaller in size/length and not as bulky. He
also had a hard time with shedding and was extremely flighty
(scared). His jowls were not as full as they have become while
in my care. He has not doubled his size in this time but close
to it. I still believe he is a young adult of not over 5 years
at this time.

I feed all the gallotia my turkey salad mix on a daily basis.
It includes ground turkey, boiled egg, tofu, yel squash,
greens and veggies, flowers and a sprinkle of calcium/vit
mixed in daily. I top it with some of their favorite fruit like
strawberry or banana slices. Maybe once or twice a week
I offer some ground chicken dog food. As an added treat
they get a few superworms or crickets maybe once a week.
They expecially get some exercise while chasing down the
faster crickets.

Hey John,
It looks like in the ohoto the females fet are up in the air. Do they do some sort of passive handwave like a beareded dragon? or is that rock just hot and she's lifting them up like a lizard in the desert?
or is it just my imagination.

that was supposed to be "photo" and "feet" and I forgot the signature would be added automatically

John-C Mar 30, 2009 10:28 AM

That's funny Lindsay,
Actually that hot bed of coals they're on does get quite
hot. Since the male had her trapped for a couple of minutes
while thinking about just what he was going to do with her,
she instinctively lifted her thin little toes so as not to get her tootsies burnt.

Being the gentleman that he is he took her to one side of
the hot stone and did his deed on the cooler sand ... what
a guy ... lol.

John,

How do I get on your baby list? I'm wanting to start a colony. Tried to email you through the forum, but the email function is not working.

Thx,
Alec
