My chuckwallas has mites what do I do?

Passtime Mar 30, 2009 08:11 PM

I saw these red bug like things crawling up him. I just held him and I saw them... What can I do get rid of them? Nail polish? Anything you guys know?

I am a little pissed because I just got him and I noticed he was sluggish... I need an answer fast.

They are in his ear and I put some olive oil on his body. His ear is stuffed with them... What do I do? I can't let it spread.

Be sure that when you put him back in his cage that it has been thoroughly scrubbed. If there is anything porous like wood, cloth, or rock formations, get rid of that stuff. The rocks you can soak in bleach, RINSE WELL, and let sit in the sunshine to air out and get rid of any residual bleach. The mites will deplete his energy and sap his will to live. Keep him warm after his olive oil treatment and scrub down. If he has a favorite food (dandelions are almost always too good to resist) give him that. Hope he'll be alright! Keep us posted. Maureen

I by accident sprayed this Reptile Spray: kills mites on Reptile, in his eye aim for his ear, which had a mite in it. I hope I got the last one off and I will bathe him tonight.

Will his eye be ok?

I would flush the lizard's eye out with water. Did you do that? And I would still do the olive oil treatment. And REALLY mind his environment and be sure it is clean and mite free! If you want the horror story of mites, Eve's website, Suncharmers, tells how a very knowlegeable lizard keeper lost many of her little buddies to mites. The devastation to her collection was swift and unforgiving. Good luck with your little buddy.

Hi!
This was told to me by Tom Greb a long time ago, and it worked beautifully. As always, if I miss remembered details and you are out there, Tom, please correct me.
Lather the Chuckwalla with olive oil or vegetable oil and place it in a cardboard shoebox overnight. The mites will abandon the animal and burrow into the cardboard for refuge from the oil. Next day, scrub the Chuckwalla with a warm bath, maybe even a little mild soap (just this once), and a toothbrush. Preferably not the one You use! LOL. Discard the box right away, and re-install the Chuckwalla in a clean terrarium

Good luck!

I have used the olive oil treatment before. It works like a charm. The mites came off instantly. It took two times to get all of them off though.

While the olive oil works great, and cleaning the cage works great.. sometimes those little pests get out of the cage, and can linger in the general area for a while.

I use no-pest-strips in combination with the olive oil treatment to eliminate the vermin! I also move the cage to an area away from it's normal location (another room) while I am treating the animal.

A single treatment of Frontline spray will kill the bugs dead. You can contact me privately for more details.
