New Guy To This Forum

guyergenetics Apr 06, 2009 08:58 AM

Hey guys, My name is Justin Guyer and I've been posting in the corn snake forum here for a while now and figured that I'd hop over here and check things out.

A little about me: I'm a correctional officer and I've been breeding reptiles, mostly corn snakes, since 2005. I am also an avid field herper.

No intro is complete without pics right? So I figured that I'd show this guy. His name is Chaos and he's an '05 male Corn X Yellow Rat cross. I'm going to attempt to breed him this year to a creamscicle and hopefully produce Corn X Yellow Rat X Emoryi hybrids that are het amel.

Anyhow, hope that you guys don't bite to badly and I'll probably be dropping in here on a fairly regular basis.

Justin,

Welcome, nice snake.

This forum is a tab bit slow but worth stopping by to check on things.

Wow really like that snake, I'm surpised on how nice that cross looks, I would've thought that combination would reasult in a muddier animal but that one really chatches my eye.

Thanks guys. I wasn't expecting a lot of activity here, but I still want to be a part of it and contribute.

I really like this snake. When he was a juvie he was very snappy and had the classic yellow rat attitude. I'd get bit every time I opened his enclosure. But as he's gotten older he has really mellowed out and now has the temperment of a typical corn snake. He's become very mellow and easy to work with.

I really like the look he has too. I like the way that the yellow rat stripes run right on top of the almost motley looking corn pattern he's sporting. He litterally shows both the corn traits and the yellow rat traits and doesn't look like some alien thing from the X Files. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of babies he can produce.

I got him from a friend of mine when he was just a hatchling. The way I understand it is that he changed hands a couple of times before I ended up with him so I have no idea who produced him.

I don't know of anyone else who has one of these. I know that he had to have clutch mates but, where are they? I've always thought of him as pretty special because I don't know of any others. I think that he'll be a fine patriarch to my hybrid lines.

You have any ideas what you will be breeding him with?

guyergenetics Apr 09, 2009 07:10 PM

A creamscicle corn. Going for a corn X yellow rat X emoryi cross that is het amel. Might come up with a new twist on the creamscicles, won't know unless I find out. Since I don't have a female corn X yellow rat I'm going to have to do something with him so I figured Why not get a bit funky? Guess we'll see how this project turns out. I have no idea what the babies will look like.

I like that idea sounds like a good project. Keep us updated on what goes on with this guy!

I will. I've really enjoyed raising this snake sonce he was a hatchling. He's the only one I've ever even heard of. Hopefully within a week or so I'll have some picks of him 'doing the deed' and of course as time passes I'll post pics of eggs, eggs pipping, and hatchlings. Providing of course, that all goes as planned with the breeding. But if there's a problem I'll be sure to report that as well. Personnally I think that this project has a high chance of success. It really shouldn't be any different than breeding corn to corn. So let's keep the fingers crossed!!

I put the Corn X Yellow Rat in with the Creamscicle yesterday evening. I observed a few of my other snakes locking up but not this pair. I'm going to leave them together for a few days and hope that they 'do the deed' when I'm not looking.

""Anyhow, hope that you guys don't bite to badly and I'll probably be dropping in here on a fairly regular basis."

i think you will learn hybrid fans are alot nicer than the purists and locality fans (a bunch of inbreeders)

That's a good thing. I've caught a little bit of flack for this project but nothing too bad.

I do mostly pure breeding with corns, milks, and kings. I play a lot with the genetic morphs also.

I've never had a problem with hybrids though. The possibilities have always intrigued me and I have wanted to explore a bit. I purchased this corn X yellow rat because it was something DIFFERENT. Back then, I hadn't even seriously considered breeding snakes, I was just keeping them for my own enjoyment.

Well, the next evelutionary step happened and I started breeding. Now I'm doing it seriously and loving it. Every year has been a success. Hell, I'm looking at possibly over 200 hatchlings this year and I can't wait!!

I'm really excited about what this project might yield. I look at my collection and I very well might try some different crosses in the future. What got me started on doing some hybrids is just the fact that this snake is just too damn pretty not to breed to something.

You guys have been great and I do appreciate the warm welcome I've recieved over here.

only a little? you got lucky! the guys that only breed localities can be HUGE jerks and will rip you a new one if you mention anything hybrid related and dont even get them started on the subject of how creamsicles have "contaminated" the gene pool. and avoid the venom forums unless youve been keeping cobras for 20 years, 9/10 of those guys will start a war if you ask if your ready for a venomous snake (or similar question). although one guy who i guess saw himself in me and gave me his phone number and we talked over the phone and he and he answered a bunch of my questions and gave me advice.

Naw, I haven't caught anything too bad about it. I've been on the net for a while now and have been involved in a flame war or two. Anymore though, things said on the net don't affect me too much. I just tell the other person to "Bl w me" and then I just ignore them from there on out. For the most part I get along with everyone pretty well.
