Need help scenting prey.......

gnik Apr 08, 2009 09:05 AM

My anaconda has been feeding great on live chicks but I can't get him over to rats/mice. I would like some specific ways that have worked for some of you. I've tried these with no go...

Letting a rat co-habitate with some live chicks (supervised of course)

Rubbing a frozen thawed chick on a rat (live/dead)

Dunking a rat in a ducks dirty water

I've tried this on different sizes of rats too.....

Thanks

I have a small green right know that will eat F/T rats if I puncture the skull and scent the head with F/T chick entrails. Works every time on this snake, and to cut back on waste, I let it follow the rat with the chick I used for scenting.

I have another that has only taken live chicks. I am going to try switching to PK or F/T chicks before trying the scented rats. This may be a good intermediate step.

Great Luck!!

What I do when i have problems like this is tie the legg of the chicken to the head/neck of the rat with unflavored unwaxed dental floss. The snake eats the chick and the rat follows after. After a bunch of feeding the snake should take the rat no problem. It also is a lot less messy!
