clutch size and frequency of jeweleds

jfarah Apr 16, 2009 03:49 PM

Hi All,

I had purchased 2.2 young jeweled lacertas from Agama International last year and it looks as though they might be big enough to breed this summer. They are really fantastic specimens and I'd strongly recommend buying from AI if they have something you are interested in...

Anyhow, I was just curious what i could expect from the females regarding clutch size and frequency once they really get going. Do they have more than one clutch per year?

Let's assume that the females are in optimal health and are full sized.

Thanks,

Joe Farah

I would suggest you not to breed them yet. It is generaly advisable not to breed T. lepidus until at least two years of age, and preferably three. Although they reach sexual maturity much earlier, early breeding puts a tremendous stress on young females' bodies and can shorten their lifespan quite a bit.
Adult females can produce at least two clutches, and if properly fed probably three clutches per season. Clutches can be anywhere from 6 to over 20 eggs, but in my experience they average 12-15 eggs/clutch. Hope that helps.

In my experience clutches of 15-25 is more the norm with Timon lepidus. But I agree 2-3 clutches are common in adults in their second year and older.
Lower clutch sizes can be expected in Timon pater and Timon tangitanus, at least I normally get 12-16 eggs with these species.
