EYES-two sick baby yellow-bellies

audi8231 Apr 16, 2009 04:20 PM

About two weeks ago i got two baby yellow belly sliders, about 1 inch each. I have them in a tank with a UVB light and a UVA basking heat lamp. I also have a exo-terra reptile filter that came with a turtle cliff for basking. everything seemed to have been going good until sunday when i woke up to find that both of their eyes were swollen shut. One of them had a nail that had been ripped out somehow, and i thought it would just grow back. I got zoo med repti eye drops for the eyes, and dipped them both in saline water..and didnt put them back in the tank. I put them in a different one for temporary use. The turtle with the ripped off nail soon got a lump on the side of his neck, and on wednesday night i came home to find him dead! The eye drops seemed to have been working better on the other turtle but not him. Now the alive turtle is eating, basking, and opening his eyes like normal. But why did the other one die, and why did it happen so fast? What was the lump on his neck, and did having the nail ripped off start the infection?

Also, what was i doing wrong in my tank, because i think that they got the infection after i got them? i want to make sure the other turtle lives

Just part of the pet-trade, nothing you could've done. Probably some fungus/virus or disease. Hatchlings at petshops have a high mortality rate.

Good luck with the other. It should survive. But about the nail being ripped out, it probably just got bit off. The lesion on its neck probably had to do with its dying.
