can someone post a pic of pregnant....

adamjeffery Apr 17, 2009 03:12 PM

can someone post a pic of pregnant uromastyx?
i have yet to see any behavior that says my pair has bred yet but have noticed that my female is a little chubby, this may be just weight gain since she woke up or possibly gravid.
i cant feel lumps in her like i can when my snakes are gravid so it may be chub. any pics would be very appreciated

This photo of one of my female Malis is not great but I hope it helps you get a feel for what a gravid Uromastyx looks like.

i dont think mine is that bulbous right now but her dimeaner has changed since she came out of brumation. she is actively trying to get out of her cage and she rarely did that last year.
a little history on my pair....

i purchased 2 saharans early in the year last year,as wild caught imports(supposedly wormed and aclimated). a male and a female. the female came in healthy looking and the male was a little thin. the female was very active and alert, the male started getting lethargic after about 2 weeks.she ended up laying 12 eggs and was very thin afterwords. the eggs were no good and not fertilized. the male stopped eating and became emaciated. teh female gained weight in a hurry and was thriving.
after talking to some experts we came up with a plan and the male started eating again and gaining weight. they were both fat and healthy before brumation. the female was actually bigger than when i got her so her being gravid last year was what she is normally this year!! the male never really brumated he stayed up and alert so i just kept feeding him. the female woke up about 3 weeks ago and has been feeding well and is in good health. both are currently in shed the male about a week ahead of the female. not sure if it correlates with breeding like snakes or not.
so i havnt noticed breeding behavior but she still could be i will let you all know thanks for letting me ramble

Here is a picture of one of my female ornate uros full of eggs, she's probably a couple weeks from laying.

Uromastyx can be pretty obvious when they are gravid, especially when close to laying. Females become very full and wide looking with the eggs visible as bulges as they move around. Since uros often balloon with air when they are handled it is hard to feel for the eggs by palpation. If a female is relaxed in your hand and not ballooning then you should be able to feel the eggs no problem a week or two before egg-laying.
