some frilled question

saphisto Apr 21, 2009 10:59 AM

hi all my frilled is about 5months old and there 2 things id like to know.

1) in every caresheet i see that you need to supply water dish for the frill to soak in.. well i never saw my frill soaked in his dish.. is that normal/ok?

2) in every caresheet i says "do not feed ur lizard with pray that bigger than the size between their eyes"
i would like to know why?
and what do happen if u give food whos bigger tan this size?

thanks.

I don't really see mine soaking either. I will sometimes put them in there though to make sure they know its there, and i'll also give them a warm soak once in a while.

They can get impaction from eating prey thats too big.

oh bugger..
1 time i selected few roaches and i gave him one that is a bit bigger
he also needed some time to fully eat it
i hope it wont damage him

1) frills often soak in the early morning, some frills dont even realize they have a water dish. if your frill has been home for about a month or longer, then its ok to take it out and give it a soak in the bathtub, maybe its just not usto doing this. use warm to touch water, never hot. or try moving water dish in key areas that your frill hangs out. maybe the water is to cool, try moving it near a light.

2) its a general rule of thumb. some reptiles have issues with MBD and as a result have a weaker "swallow" and may choak. healthy reptiles often can be fed items slightly larger then this area, but keep a close eye, if you notice no issue feeding something SLIGHTLY larger, you must use great caution doing thihs as it may cause choaking. for instance, roaches are often slightly wider then the mouth by nature of the nymph roaches shape of body, my frill chews it back and forth, takes a break, then continues chewing and swallows, if frill is not in optimal heath it may have issue swallowing as the muscles may be weak. thus this rule of thumb applies.

always use caution when feedingg any item larger, it is a risk. but if your frill is obiously having no issue, well i still say watch him, never risk it.

thanks for you comment

1) i do bath him in a large container once in a while with worm water but i dont think he likes it too much, i know he stomp on his water dish several times so i guess he knows its there.

2)what u described is exactly what he does! he chews the roach back and forth take a break then chewing again untill he can swallow it, and i always watch him as he feed he only eats from my hand, so i guess the chewing and brake thing is normal.

another thing, till what age should i notice this rule? i saw on youtube for example thats ppl feeds they frills with mice and very large worms the are alot bigger than the space between their eyes.

When I got my frilly, he never seemed to see or care about the water dish for the first several months, but I did leave it in. As time went by, I would take a day off work now and then and sleep in. SEVERAL times when I would get up at say 9ish, and walk past his cage in the living room, where was he? In his water dish.

Here is my theory. 9ish is when everyone would usualy be off to work or school, leaving the house perfictly quite. That is when he feels comfortable enough to go down and drink/soak. Why at that time you ask? In the wild preditors will hang at waters holes mainly waiting on a meal. Even though they are CB, this genetic information is hard wired into their brain. They are very vulnerable at this time. So I am willing to bet he is using the water bowl, but just when you are not around. Leave the water bowl in!!

haaa nice explenation
the water dish still in his terraium i wont put her out cause i need it also for the humidity.

btw
how is the exo-terra fogger for maintaining humidity? is it a good product?

fc3schick87 Apr 22, 2009 08:02 AM

ultrasonic humidifier is a good idea if your having a hard time maintaining humidity, but its not good for a confined space as the water vapor doesnt get a chance to break down out of its cloud form and may cause RI. i often recomend coconut husk and internal lights (inside the enclosure) many fear from the internal lights as they fear burns may occure from contact, but if you place them in areas with nothing around it it wont be an issue. check out my post about my collection you'll see my pictures.

as far as humidity goes i use coconut husk. internal lights, cork bark, and cork panneling(sheets) on the walls of the enclosure to maintain 65-85 threwought the day. i also minimized the screen vent area . u can do so by means of plastic wrap or foil. i used plexi glass.

hey i read A-LOT! of caresheets for frilled dragon
unfortunentlly they all conatin the same words.. sometimes it seems like some1 copy/paste it and shared.

my question is about the food,
i didnt see any mention about silk worms and buffalo worms
is it good to feed my frill with those types?
