Dekayi Snake Help...

GRT Apr 25, 2009 03:24 PM

Hi all,

I have a Dekayi snake that a neighbor found in the yard about 6 months ago, that I saved and have been keeping since. It's been doing fine, but today I noticed something weird with it's body. It's hard to describe, but basically about the middle of it's body, it's looking kinda "squished" in and thinner than the rest of the body.

The snake is moving about normally, doesn't act like it's sick and it has eaten this week. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be? It's hard to describe and I noticed that it's body was looking odd when I looked in it's cage today. The snake has not escaped and has not been outside the cage without strict supervision (I basically don't handle it unless I am cleaning the cage, in which case it goes into a box).

any ideas on what this can be? I am concerned...The rest of it's body looks absolutely normal, it's just the middle where it looks kind of twisted/squished...there are also no scars or anything.

Thanks in advance...

I have no idea what that is, but if the snake is eating, pooping, and otherwise acting normally, I'd say give it some time and see how it looks.

You should email Cochran from the corn snake forum. If he does not know all about it (and I think he does) he will know someone who does know.

The snake passed away. Thanks for the help anyway. At least it lived for 6 months longer than it would've if I didn't take it in. No idea on what it was and it was eating and acting normally up to this point.

sorry to hear you lost your snake. I've this kind of thing in a few sickly baby snakes. About two thirds of the way down all the sudden the body looks flat and smushed with folds of skin. The snake will eat and be active but not gain weight back or normal shape in that area, and quickly dies. I don't know what this is symptomatic of, but if I had to take a stab at it, I would guess some sort of disease or internal parasite that causes quick and sudden wasting away?

Thanks for the information. I was worried that it might've been something that I did wrong (I never had a snake before), but it appears that I was doing the right thing. Thank you for your response...
