Primary Rainforest in Africa.

Paul Bodnar May 02, 2009 09:49 AM

Greeting All,

Primary rainforest is a forest which has never been cut/cleared, where as secondary rainforest was cut down at one time and allowed to regrow over time.

If you look closely, I am a the size of a speck on the path near the tropical tree.

Truly,

Hey Paul.

Nice pics and beautiful forest, but it is not primary. Primary is more technically based on a % sunlight through canopy ratio coupled with the lack of historic disturbance. You wouldn't typically see banana and "colonizing" species in true primary or the thick understory growth characterized in the photo. It appears that the area has been harvested for firewood/buidling material at some point and reestablished. But many people do call "tall treed" forest "primary" on a common basis, so I understand the confusion.

Again, great pics!

Hello Shawn,

What country did you visit in Africa? The arch bishop Dr. Pere Pierre Tang in one of the pictures has a Ph.d in agriculture. He will be flying over from Cameroon to Ohio and staying with us during November 2009, to work on a few different projects.

Please email me off the forum and I can send you more information about this region of southern Cameroon.
