Questions about hatching Desert Igs

Rosebuds May 13, 2009 11:29 AM

My female is definitely gravid, and I might have two more gravid females coming next week. Thanks Nick and Austin!

So, I have a few questions and hope someone responds.

1) What is the temp range that I should use to incubate eggs? I have the hova set up between 83-85 degrees F. Is that temp range appropriate for desert igs?

2) I have read that, like chuck babies, desert ig babies need to eat adult feces to establish gut flora. Is this true?

3) If question 2 is yes, then is it okay to put baby igs in with their parents or should I collect adult feces and put it in with the babies?

The eggs should be ok at 83-85, but I would go a little higher; 86-88.
We haven't dealt with a lot of hatchling DIs, so we couldn't really say that they NEED to eat an adult's feces for the gut flora, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to offer it to your hatchlings for the first week or so. It would be best to keep the babies in a separate cage, and collect feces from the adult cage. We have seen babies and adults in close proximity in the wild, but you never know how they will act when housed together in a captive setting.

Good luck with the eggs.

Should I take Daddy and Hota out?

I wouldn't worry too much about removing the other 2.
You might want to if they are trying to hide with the nesting female, or otherwise disturbing her.
