Madrean Behavior, is it unusual?

obsoleta May 14, 2009 03:11 PM

So I have 2 Elgaria kingii that we found while we were cleaning up the property here in Tombstone, AZ. We are running a Bird of Prey Show and a Herp Exhibit, so I kept the lizards for the exhibit (and we removed all the lumber they could have hid under)

Anyways, from day one, both lizards have been very mellow. They don't bit or thrash about as I remember Alligator Lizards doing in my youth in Southern California. They just sit quiet and motionless flicking their tongues like nothing is bothering them.

They make no attempt to run away. One of them is missing a foot, an both of them have had their tales taken at some point in time. I assume these are injuries due to cats in the neighborhood.

I was just wondering if anyone else had "tame" wild caught madreans.

I use to breed Madreans. Of course all of my founding stock was WC. Most, mayber 80%, would eventually calm down and became rather nice display animals, especially because of their diurnal habits.

There use to be an extremely tame Madrean that hung out in Peddler's Alley in Bisbee. It was really cool, cruising right past your feet while looking for flies on dropped food. And huge too, it had to be 12". As much as I wanted it, I didn't have the heart to pick it up, it truly belonged there.
