Knight anole only eating super worms

rachel4rent May 22, 2009 07:30 PM

My knight lost interest in crickets right before winter and would only eat super worms (and very few at that). Then he pretty much lost his entire appetite for winter and now is only eating super worms. Is this really unhealthy? Should I try roaches (if I can find a breeder) to vary his diet? I was considering trying baby food as a treat but I wanted suggestions on what types. Thanks!

You could also try some soft fruits, like grapes, blue berries, strawberries, even banana chunks. I've had Knights even eat diced apples. Hope that helps.

apparently, superworms/king mealworms don't really have a high nutritional content, due to the fact that the majority of distributors rarely feed/gutload these feeder insects. Also, the high chitin/shell content of the "worm" is relatively high, so the risk of impaction is there. Try silkworms-soft bodied caterpillars, high in nutrition.

if all else fails, gutload those superworms and hope for the best!

good luck

Yes, fruits would be nice to try. In addition to the ones he mentioned i'd try black berries as well. Waxworms are high in fat but i think they are fairly nutritious(high in calcium i know). Sounds crazy, but if there are june-bugs near your house, throw them in the cage. They stimulate interest with my knight. Mine won't even look at moths anymore but if a june-bug flys by in the cage he will go crazy for it. I know some of the larger ones have a hard wingcase but the smaller ones should be fine.

That's sort of odd. Mine will eat crickets, but he really likes adult grasshoppers, katydids, and fuzzy mice. I used to give him pinkies but he was eating 3-4 at a time, so I moved him to fuzzies. They will also absolutely destroy any other anole you put in the cage with them. My daughter taught us that when she caught on outside and put it in the knights cage.

Thats insane! I was JUST talking to my dad about potentionally feeding my knight some of the pinkies that i have for my python. Does yours only eat live? Have you tried frozen/thawed? I only have frozen and I'm not sure if my anole would go for that considering that he has to see it moving in order to eat it.
